Autel MaxiTPMS ITS600 and Autel Diagnostic Scanners: 7 Questions Shop Owners Ask

In my role running the diagnostic bay at a multi-brand independent shop, I've triaged more than 400 same-day TPMS and diagnostic jobs over the past six years. Most follow the same pattern: a customer with a deadline, a warning light on the dash, and no time for guesswork.

This article is the FAQ I wish I'd had before buying our first dedicated TPMS tool. It covers the Autel MaxiTPMS ITS600, how it fits next to an Autel diagnostic scanner, and what actually saves you time when the clock matters.

1. What exactly is the Autel MaxiTPMS ITS600?

The ITS600 is Autel's dedicated TPMS service tool. It triggers tire pressure sensors to read pressure, temperature, and battery status. It reads and clears TPMS fault codes. And it runs the relearn procedure after a sensor replacement or tire rotation. That's its lane, and it does it well.

What it isn't: an engine diagnostic scanner. I've had customers ask if it would pull a P0302 misfire code. It won't. For engine diagnostics, you're looking at a full Autel diagnostic scanner. I'm saying that up front because I've seen shop owners order the wrong tool and end up annoyed.

One thing I should add: the ITS600 also reads and clears TPMS codes through the OBD port, not just through sensor triggering. So it covers both sides of the system.

2. I already have an Autel diagnostic scanner. Why do I need the ITS600?

This was my own question too. A full scanner can read TPMS codes through the OBD port. So why spend the money on a dedicated tool?

Two things changed my mind.

First, depth. A scanner tells you "low pressure, rear left." The ITS600 triggers that sensor directly, confirms the battery is alive, and shows the pressure and temperature reading at the sensor. You're not guessing which corner the fault points to.

Second, the relearn. On many vehicles, the relearn procedure requires OE-level access or a dedicated TPMS tool. I once watched a tech spend 25 minutes digging through menus with a general scanner. The ITS600 finished the same job in about 4 minutes. That comparison ended my doubts about the purchase.

If you're not doing TPMS work every week, a scanner might be enough. But even general repair shops hit TPMS work more often than they expect.

3. Which Autel diagnostic scanner should my shop buy?

I'll give you a decision framework instead of a model number, because the right answer depends on your workload.

  • Engine codes, maintenance resets, basic service: an entry-level Autel code reader or compact scanner is enough. A solid fit for mobile techs and quick-lube operations.
  • Full-service shop work: step up to a scanner with bidirectional control. You need to command a fan on, cycle a relay, or watch live data while you work the throttle. That capability is what separates a diagnostic scanner from a code reader.
  • Advanced module work and programming: the MaxiSys line brings wider coverage, more programming functions, and faster processing. Worth it when you're doing complex electrical diagnostics weekly.

My usual advice: buy the highest tier you can justify, but don't buy a flagship if your week is oil changes and brake pads. We bought a mid-range scanner first and then added the ITS600 a year later. In hindsight, I should have bought both at the same time—the TPMS work paid for the ITS600 within 12 months. I just didn't see the volume coming.

4. Flashing TPMS light vs. solid: does the difference matter?

Yes, and every service writer should know it cold.

Per FMVSS 138—the NHTSA regulation that has required TPMS on new passenger vehicles since model year 2008—a solid TPMS light means under-inflation. A flashing light means a system malfunction: a dead sensor battery, a missing sensor, or an electronics fault.

In an emergency, this distinction saves time. A customer shows up 90 minutes before a road trip with a flashing light. You don't need to pull the wheels blindly. Plug in the ITS600, trigger each sensor, and you'll know within a minute which corner is dead and whether the battery is the problem.

I still kick myself for the early days when we'd pull wheels first and diagnose second. Backwards and slow.

5. How long does a full TPMS service actually take?

Our first sensor replacement took over an hour. We didn't know where the sensor was mounted, the tire machine hit it, and the customer watched everything from the waiting room. Painful way to learn.

With the ITS600 as standard procedure, a single sensor replacement now runs:

  • Identify the faulty sensor: 1–2 minutes
  • Remove tire, replace sensor: 10–15 minutes
  • Program and relearn: 3–5 minutes

Roughly 15–22 minutes per wheel. Four sensors on a vehicle that requires a full relearn? Budget about an hour.

In March 2025, a customer came in at 4:30 PM with a flashing TPMS light and a 6 AM flight. We had the sensor replaced and the car out by 5:15. That's the difference a dedicated tool makes when there's no plan B.

Our shop policy now requires the ITS600 to be on the bench during any tire service. That policy started after a 2024 tire rotation where no one planned for the relearn until the wheels were already back on the car.

6. Can the ITS600 program aftermarket sensors?

Yes. That's one of the main reasons shops buy it.

Autel's MX-sensor series is a programmable replacement, and the ITS600 writes the original sensor ID onto a new MX-sensor. That means you're not waiting on dealer parts for a common Ford, Toyota, or Honda. When the vehicle is on the lift and the customer needs it back today, that matters.

One warning: not all aftermarket sensors are built the same. I've had great results with the branded option and frustrating comebacks with no-name sensors bought to save $10. Repeating a job six months later isn't a bargain. At least, that's been my experience across roughly 200 sensor replacements in the last two years.

7. What's the biggest mistake techs make with a TPMS tool?

Holding it wrong. I'm serious.

Sensor triggering works best when the tool is within a couple of inches of the sensor location, usually by the valve stem. Wave it around the whole tire and you'll get no response. Half the "this tool doesn't work" reports I've seen turned out to be positioning problems, not equipment problems.

The second mistake is skipping updates. TPMS protocols shift every model year. A tool that handled 2021 vehicles confidently might blink at newer systems if the firmware hasn't been refreshed. When you compare Autel tools, check the update subscription terms for the exact model—they differ, and that difference matters over years of ownership.

If you're still on the fence: track how many TPMS jobs you've sent to the dealer in the last 12 months. Include the tire rotations that should have included a relearn. Then do the math. That number convinced me faster than any spec sheet.
