In July 2024, a customer called at 4:30 PM asking if we could get their SUV ready for a family trip to Yellowstone the next morning. Most shops do this backward. They pop the hood, check fluids, pull the air filter, and then — if there's time — scan for trouble codes. That's the wrong order. I connect the Autel OBD-II scanner first, before I even touch the hood release.
The scanner tells me where to look. A full diagnostic scan covers all the modules, not just the engine. It also surfaces pending codes — codes that haven't lit up the dashboard yet. A pending misfire on cylinder 3 won't show a warning light, but it will absolutely leave a family stranded somewhere with no cell reception.
When I'm triaging a pre-trip inspection, the scan drives how I spend the next 45 minutes. Clean scan? I move fast through mechanical checks. Stored code? I know exactly which system to dig into. That ordering has saved me hours. I've had cars come in for a "quick check" with stored ABS codes that a visual inspection would never have revealed.

The 13 cu ft Honda box is a good size for two or three suitcases plus soft bags, and it keeps the cabin from getting packed to the ceiling. But the mounting feet and latches take a beating from wind, UV, and temperature changes. I check three things:
- Crossbars are solid — I don't need a torque wrench every time, but the mount should have zero wobble.
- The latch fully engages — open and close the box, don't just tug on it. A worn latch can click without actually locking.
- Mounting feet are crack-free — hairline cracks in the plastic feet can spread fast at highway speed.
I had a customer who drove 300 miles with a roof box latch that wasn't fully closed. The box stayed shut the whole way — lucky. The latch had worn down so it clicked but didn't actually lock. We caught it because we actually opened and closed the box instead of just giving it a tug. A 30-second check caught a potential freeway debris incident.

Number five is short, but it's saved me from sending out cars with real hazards. I check the battery terminals for corrosion, make sure there's no obvious wiring rubbing on sharp metal, and if there's aftermarket audio, I peek at how it's wired.
